It was mid-2017 when my husband said, “Hey, so, I’m going to buy these two bikes that are a ridiculous amount of money… so… you better get something expensive for yourself, too!” …
Yea, I know how that sounds. It does not make sense that when one person spends money, the other person ALSO gets to spend money. What makes more sense is that when one person spends a chunk of cash, it means the other person is _prevented_ from buying things, like food. or paying rent or the mortgage. or new underwear for the kids.
But because I am a Real Housewife of Silicon Valley, a lot of things that happen in my life are umop apisdn (omg spell check and auto correct are losing their minds… upside down). Instead of me tightening the wallet and being frugal, I get to match his spending, and in this way maintain some semblance of equality in our relationship! (an exclamation point which here means I’m being a bit sarcastic because the whole notion is ridiculous, equality for a stay at home mom house wife is laughable…i mean, a goal we all SAHMhousewives strive to achieve?)
Well I’m not looking a gift horse in the mouth! Instead of rushing to Target for a Supermarket Sweep style shopping spree, I thought to myself, “what is he getting out of his bike rides, and what could I get for myself that would give me the same thing…”
Number one: time outside the house.
Number two: an activity that is fulfilling.
Number three: self care.
I had a heart-racing flash of inspiration after listening to complaints, for the thousandth time, about my projects on the dining room table. I needed somewhere else to do my projects. I needed to have a reason to leave the house. I needed space to do things that feel fulfilling (parenting is a thankless, difficult, soul bruising job). I needed to immerse myself in the one activity that brings me joy. I needed an art studio.
Join me in future posts, where I might walk you through the fantastical process of finding and developing my art studio, how being a RHoSV shapes my reality, and why I love llamas.
Thanks for reading!
